We see a lot of people in our office, actually, from all over the country with Meniere’s Disease. Now, if you’ve never heard of Meniere’s Disease, that’s good. But what it is, is basically a triad of inner-ear problems.
Ringing in the ears or Tinnitus, loss of balance or dizziness, vertigo, and then a loss of hearing. Sometimes Meniere’s symptoms can be so bad that you feel like almost instantaneously seasick, where you get nauseated because of the dizziness and you want to throw up. I’ve had patients, kids that have come in to me that have missed 160 days of school, looking to do streptomycin therapy and kill the entire inner-ear, which means they would be completely deaf for life.
A wide range of severity, some people are so severe that they have a hard time ever even leaving their house, and some people are somewhat manageable. What we have found though, is the vestibulocochlear nerve is a cranial nerve that comes directly off the brain stem and goes back up and innervates the ear. It has two branches, the vestibular branch controls the balance, and the cochlear branch controls hearing. So what happens with Meniere’s Disease is, a majority of times, when they look at the ear, there’s nothing wrong with the ear. But yet, somewhere between the ear and the brain, the messages that go to the brain are distorted, which affects the hearing and the balance part.
So this effects the tinnitus, the loss of hearing and the balance, which creates the dizziness and vertigo sensations, nausea, the sea-sick type feelings. Now tell me if this doesn’t make sense. If the ear is perfectly fine, but yet the brain’s getting a message that’s not fine, then somewhere between the ear and the brain, there’s got to be something that’s altering that message.
So what we have found is, pretty much every single case I’ve had, and I’m going to say I’ve had probably at least three or four hundred in the last 24 years of Meniere’s patients; is that every single time what we have found one of the top bones in the upper neck has been misaligned to the point that it’s actually putting pressure at the level of the brain stem where that nerve goes to the brain.
So what that does, like stepping on a garden hose, it alters the message between the ear and the brain. The ear is fine, sound should be fine, hearing should be fine, balance should be fine. But the brain, somewhere between the brain and the ear is getting an altered message. If that bone is out line and it’s putting pressure on that nerve or on the brain stem where that nerve comes in, then it gives a sensation to the brain that there is a message coming through that nerve that creates the ringing in the ears, that creates the balance problems, and creates the alternating or fluctuations in hearing.
What we have found is, is if we can take some pictures of those upper two bones and we can find a very specific misalignment in the top of the neck, if we can get that bone back exactly where it should, like taking your foot off of the garden hose, now the normal message of balance and hearing from the hear gets to the brain. So the brain now sense what the ear is truly telling it, and that is that everything is okay, that there is no ringing in the ears, that there is no balance problems, that there is no fluctuations in hearing, and the Meniere’s symptoms start to heal.
Crazy as it sounds, one thing that I can guarantee you; Meniere’s Disease, and vertigo and loss of hearing, all these things, they do not come from a drug deficiency. So, if you’re taking medications with hopes of possibly correcting the cause of your Meniere’s Disease, forget about it. It’s not going to happen. There is something going on within your body that’s creating your Meniere’s symptoms. The problem has to be in your body, so the only way to correct it has to also be in your body.
